studio b in conversation with Sebastian Herkner

This summer, studio b caught up with Sebastian Herkner, designer of the client favourite, Dedon Mbrace collection.

Q: What is your design process, and how do you typically approach a new design project?
A:
I think there is not typical structure and system I follow all the time. Normally the process starts with a dialogue with the client and a visit to understand the brand and their passion and vision. I love to look behind the scenes and meet the craftsmen, who are giving life to the ideas of designers. Myself I need a quiet moment to start sketching and creating a concept. It is a very emotional and personal process based on my experience and design philosophy. I have a huge responsibility and itis a wonderful way to express myself in new objects. Having a final idea I share it with my team and we start together making models and3D renders. Design is  teamwork.

Q: Can you tell us about the MBRACE collection with DEDON– what was the inspiration for this collection?

A: MBRACE is about living outdoors, it transfers our indoor to the garden. We decided to create typologies like daybed, rocking chair, wing chair, which are typically indoor, for the outdoor. We added color ways to the Dedon collection as well as teak in combination with the iconic Dedon fibre. Later we added the aluminium bases to the collection to provide even more possibilities to architects. We developed a special weave which is not closed, it is open so the nature can interact with the product. You hear the birds, feel the wind. It isa collection made for people enjoying the nature with the same comfort and quality they are used to in their homes.
